This tower fan is much stronger than other towers, which is exactly what I wanted. Basically, you just plop it down wherever you choose and aim it using the remote. Because of the volume of air it circulates, it isn't quiet on its highest setting. I attribute that to the strength of the motor and the noise generated by so much air being moved. However, the medium and low settings are quieter. If your primary goal is to have a quiet room, maybe an overhead fan would work better. For me, the monotonous sound works well as a white noise to put me to sleep and to block miscellaneous traffic sounds.
